The workshop will include the following topics:
What is trauma
How and why we offer trauma informed support
The crucial importance of the language we use
How we work with our own trauma responses while offering support
How mindfulness is an integral part of trauma informed care
What is an abortion doula and what is our scope of practice
The workshop is being presented by Shannon Hardy, a social worker and full spectrum doula in Halifax, NS. She is currently finishing her Masters in Social Work and on completion will be a Clinical Social Worker in the field of sexual and reproductive wellness. Shannon is also the founder and coordinator of Abortion Support Services Atlantic, a volunteer led group offering information, support and funding to anyone needing an abortion in the Atlantic provinces. She has trained over 60 new abortion doulas from across NS, NB, NFLD and Labrador. For 12 years, Shannon has been educating on the topics of consent, trauma informed care and sexual and reproductive justice. In 2006 she cofounded the NS Doula Association and in 2012 she began ConsentFest Halifax. She is a regular speaker on university campuses and is a member of the NS Health Coalition, NS College of Social Workers Social Justice Committee and Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada.
